I always think it’s a good thing to explore your drinking, take a pause or simply minimize it together.

It might seem like almost everything we do as adults tends to revolve around toasting to milestones, holidays, happy hours, cocktail parties, and so on.

Contrary to popular belief and the small curated portion of my insta-life, I don’t drink as often as it might seem. That’s not to say I don’t enjoy a cocktail with friends or a glass of wine from time to time on the weekends.

I think taking a closer look at the role alcohol plays in your life and how it relates to you is a great idea.

Every January for the last handful of years, I’ve taken a break in January. And while many simply don’t understand why, I always end the month feeling my best.

    The Benefits of Mocktails

Whether you're trying to cut back on your alcohol intake or you're looking for a non-alcoholic option, mocktails are a great choice! Here are some of the benefits of going alcohol-free:

    • Mocktails are low in calories

    • You can control the amount of sugar you consume

    • Mocktails are hydrating

    • They're perfect for designated drivers or anyone who wants to stay sober.

    • Mocktails are inclusive - everyone can enjoy them!

What does Zero Proof mean in alcohol?

Zero Proof alcohol means that the finished product will contain no more than 0.05% ABV (Alcohol by Volume). This is the international standard for what qualifies as a non-alcoholic or alcohol-free beverage.

Do Zero Proof drinks have alcohol?

No, Zero Proof drinks do not have any alcohol. Zero Proof spirits are alcoholic beverages that have had the alcohol removed. This can be done through various methods, such as distilling or fermenting. Zero Proof spirits do not contain any alcohol and are therefore safe for those abstaining from alcohol or who are unable to drink for other reasons.

Do Zero Proof Spirits Taste Similar?

Non-alcoholic spirits are a great way to showcase mixology at its essence and be fully inclusive for all guests. Great brands are recreating gins, rums, tequilas, and aperitifs without alcohol. Adding aromatic elements such as bitters, herbs, citrus, and smoke to give depth to the cocktails and mimic the mouthfeel of alcohol and adding effervescence is also good. Zero-proof spirits are sophisticated and are getting more popular as they’re featured on cocktail lists. Wilderton Free and Ritual Zero Proof are two that are becoming largely popular.

Making Mocktails with Wilderton Free Zero-Proof

Put away that sad can of seltzer and say cheers with this Wilderton Free as we head into the weekend!

This delicious recipe was inspired by the classic Manhattan, featuring seasonal ingredients like black cherries, Mission Figs, and Wilderton's Lustre. There’s not a smidge of alcohol in this recipe—but there’s certainly nothing childish about this sexy, smoky, tea- and black cherry-infused riff on the iconic Manhattan.

The citrus, floral, and herb notes are perfect for this Fig Tea-ni. You can expect a bright, tangy, and lush with a long-lasting finish from the Lustre complimented by the jamminess of Mission Figs and the subtle sweetness of the cherries and smokiness of the black tea.

Homemade Mission Fig syrup lends this simple yet elevated drink a sophisticated bright herbal edge featuring Wilderton Free’s Lustre.

The best part? One batch of syrup takes only minutes to make and will last you through a half dozen drinks. Other ingredients like apricot and vanilla bean can also be used in place of Mission Figs with delicious results.

For maximum effect, skip the neon red cherries and garnish it with ones made with real Maraschino, like those sold under the Luxardo name.

    Wild + Free Fig-Tea-Ni Recipe

    What You’ll Need

    Fig-Tea-ni

    2 ounces Wilderton's Lustre
    3 tbsp black tea, chilled
    ½ tsp Fig Syrup
¼ tsp syrup from the maraschino cocktail cherry jar
    1 tsp dashes Orange juice
1 maraschino cocktail cherry, to decorate
    Orange or citrus peel

    Fig Syrup

8 ounces Mission Figs, coarsely chopped
    1 cup turbinado sugar
    ½ cup black tea
    ½ cup water
    1 tablespoon lemon juice

    What You’ll Need To Know

    Fig Syrup

Combine figs, sugar, black tea, water, and lemon juice in a saucepan. Bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring until sugar is dissolved. Continue to simmer for 10 minutes or until figs are softened. Remove from heat, cover and let steep for 20 minutes. Strain liquid through a fine-mesh seize. Reserve softened figs for another use. You should have about 1 cup of liquid.

Return strained liquid to saucepan and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until syrup is thickened and reduced by about a third (it will continue to thicken as it cools). This should take about 15 minutes, slightly less if you are using a wider saucepan (more surface area=more evaporation=quicker reduction time). After reducing you should have about 2/3 cup. Transfer to a jar or other container and let cool slightly, then cover tightly and refrigerate until ready to use. Syrup will keep in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks.

Put one cherry into the bottom of a martini glass or coupe. Pour all the other ingredients into a cocktail shaker with the ice cubes. Shake vigorously for around a minute. Strain the mix into the glass. Decorate with citrus peel twisted or threaded onto a cocktail stick. Sip, and eat the cherries afterwards. Enjoy!
