20 Lessons Learned in 2020 to Take Into The New Year

Do you know how nice it was to stay in on New Year’s Eve; curling up in our coziest clothes,  drinking champagne, and laughing about the past decade and how we got to where we are today? Very nice.

One word mantra for the next 365 days: relentless.

As an adult, I have learned how to leave home, how to travel (mostly alone), how to build a personal brand, how to look after myself, how to feel good, and how to look at life differently.

When I look back at 2020, it taught me how to be resilient. This year I’d like to be relentless; To not adapt to the energy in the room, but to influence the energy in the room.

Here are 20 of the most powerful and influential lessons I have learned from 2020 to take into this new year:

  1. Think positively, choose good-feeling thoughts, and practice gratitude.

  2. Believe you have the power and the ability to design the life you want. Don’t settle. Don’t let anyone tell you can’t do anything. Don’t just accept the cards you’ve been dealt or let them define you. Realize you have the power to change the course of your life at any moment.

  3. You don’t have to follow the exact steps of others before you.

  4. Don’t control things too much. Learn to allow things and to let go.

  5. Be present and go slow. Don’t rush. You are exactly where you need to be right now.

  6. See problems, obstacles, and challenges as lessons and chances to grow. You need to have the lows to appreciate the highs. The lows help us evolve.

  7. The things you desire are usually just outside of your comfort zone.

  8. You don’t have to know what you want to do in life and you don’t have to choose just one career path for life. You can change anytime. Life is an experience, try different things; some will work, some won’t.

  9. Don’t compete too much or be too proud. Support others.

  10. Don’t always wait for exciting things to happen. Being able to enjoy the most mundane moments is key to consistent happiness.

  11. Don’t compare yourself or your life to others. This is difficult, but keep reminding yourself.

  12. Understand that the way you react to things is the way you experience life. We all experience life the way that we interpret the things that happen to us, so changing the way you choose to react to things will change your life dramatically.

  13. Set intentions and make a list of things you want in life. Don’t worry about how or when they will happen. Plant the seeds and trust that the things that are meant for you will come.

  14. Increase your self-worth and really try to love yourself.

  15. Don’t take things or yourself too seriously. Life is short. Enjoy it.

  16. Do not adapt to the energy in the room, but to influence the energy in the room.

  17. Being at home, and slowing down isn’t all that bad.

  18. It’s okay to say no without feeling guilty about things that don’t serve you. Setting boundaries is important.

  19. A certain level of stress can sometimes be helpful, provided it doesn’t overwhelm us.

  20. Mental hygiene is just as important as your physical hygiene. Exploring things to ca;m the mind like meditation, going on a walk without music or podcast, taking time to journal or even coloring can do wonders.

When considering this brand new year, the only certain question you can ask yourself at this moment is: what do you intend?

What is your one-word mantra for 2021?
